Turn Up Your Volume in a Down Economy   Excellent article! Your newsletter is one of the few I read. It is always well put together, on target, very informative and every article is useful. Thanks for including me.

Turn Up Your Volume in a Down Economy   Narrowing the target is what Ford failed to do with the Edsel during the late 50s recession. It was advanced for its day and engineered well, but failure to market correctly ultimately did it in. See, I was paying attention during economics class.

What is your Ability to Innovate?   We have a formal process in place to innovate. ait exists of a committe of 6 people from both GME and Pro-tec that meet monthly to discuss ideas and set priorities for our r & D department to work on. This process was started the first of the year and has been helpful moving us forward. I would have to say that we are being more reactionary so far by mainly focusing on problems that exist and how to solve them. We aslo have received some very good ideas form outside sources such as our distributors and ens users. Where we seem to be weak in my opinion is creating brand new ideas such as new products and concepts. It would probably be very helpful to tap into our outside sources better by picking some of our more innovative dealers and end users to set down a couple time of years to brainstorm. We aslo recently subscribed to a service that supplies new product ideas from inventors that are trying to take an idea (usually patented) to market. The company is Intromark and we have few items that we are currently evaluating. May be a good source. We have a few very innovative people that given a problem they can usually find a sloution. We have made some good process with the committee solving problems qnd expanding our current product lines but nothing really "out of the box" that will create big dollars.

Capitalize on Innovations   I believe we sell a service as well as a product and help the customer be more productive. We do need to be more updated in our sales approach with the newer technology available.

Capitalize on Innovations   In the last year we have added several value added ideas to our product line. They are items that will not generate a lot of sales dollars but will bring customers back to us because they are innovations unique to us that help our customers do their jobs faster, easier and safer. But we lack as far as new products that generate big sales volume.

Innovation Agility   My guess is that Toyota will not be succesful at standardizing automotive computer operating system's and it would not be equivilant to a microsoft windows. Microsoft was not related to a leading manufacturer and that was part of the success. Had IBM tried to purchase Microsoft and control the operating system it would have had much less success. A competitor will purchase technology or products as little as possible from a competitor, and we see this in our industry as well. A good example being Sony's Beta format video.

Innovation Agility   Hard to relate such big company thinking and staffing to our organization. We are wearing a lot of hats here. I do think we have a good start in both the innovation of products and common sense manufaturing. Our strength is that we are including people form the shop floor to the top of the organization and that is very important. It is also great that we have support from the board to finance the R & D function.

Innovation Agility   I believe that cost has been an issue in new development it the past but I think that is changing somewhat. I think we are getting the proper people in place for R&D projects and making some good strides in that direction
